The History of Biederman’s Deli
In August of 1973, the town of Plymouth, New Hampshire had more gas stations than places to eat and socialize. But when the drinking age was lowered to 18 – that all changed. A man named Irv Clark decided to open The Cellar Pub in the basement of Volpe’s Market (now Chase Street Market). With two draft beers on tap, seven sandwich selections and Tony’s Frozen Pizza, “The Pub” quickly became a favorite hangout for locals and Plymouth State University (formerly Plymouth State College) students. Many could be found watching their favorite team on the “big screen” television – 19 inches, playing a furious game of foosball or choosing the latest hit from the jukebox. The rustic décor of The Pub, with its Formica wood-grain bar, heavy pine tables and benches, orange painted walls and white suspended ceilings, were adequate for the rough-and-tumble business that came in nightly.
When The Pub opened in 1973, Irv Clark hired Scott Biederman, a Plymouth State College student, to work nights tending bar and serving food. After Scott graduated, he accepted the position of general manager and worked to make The Pub a place locals could call “home”. Then on October 3, 1976, Scott and Patti (Ryan), his significant other and fellow Plymouth State College graduate (’76) took an adventurous step and purchased the business.
